6 Signs Your Toddler Might Have a Vitamin Deficiency (and the Safe Way to Address It)

Here’s how to spot if your 2 year is lacking specific nutrients.

1. Pale or Dull Skin

The first sign your toddler is lacking in certain vitamins is pale or dull skin, even in Summer. This is especially common for an iron or Vitamin B12 deficiency. The main food sources of these nutrients is meat and fish, so if your two year old is refusing to eat these, it can be an indicator that they may need a supplement.

2. Irritability

Poor mood and lack of concentration can often be a sign that there are gaps in your toddler’s diet. Vitamin D, B12 and Iron all help regulate emotions and stabilize the nervous system. Ensuring your child is getting enough of these can alleviate crankiness.

3. Slower Growth and Development

Poor diet can lead to toddlers missing developmental milestones. Calcium is particularly important for bone growth, so ensure they are getting enough to avoid any delays. Muscle cramps or bone pain can be signs they need a better intake of calcium.

4. Delicate Skin and Poor Healing

Skin issues such as dryness, mouth ulcers, or cracked lips may mean your toddler needs more Vitamin C and E. If they bruise easily or scrapes and cuts don’t heal as fast as they should, your two year old could be lacking the basic nutrients to help them maintain a healthy skin barrier and proper cellular repair.

5. Constantly Sick

If your toddler seems to always be catching bugs and taking longer than normal to recover, their immune system may be lacking the sufficient nutritional support to function properly. Vitamins C, D, and Zinc are all vital for fighting off viruses, so make sure your kid isn’t missing out on any of these.

6. Tiredness

Low energy, even after a full night’s sleep could mean your toddler needs to consume more vitamins and minerals. The B Vitamins can help with fatigue, as can adequate iron consumption and Vitamin D.

If you think your toddler is showing signs of any of the above, supplementing their diet with a multivitamin can help to improve their overall health, wellbeing, and development, while also giving you peace of mind. If symptoms persist, always consult a doctor.
